How to Actively Promote Your Own Self-Confidence

Even the greatest leaders lack self-confidence at certain times. Self-confidence is not a static quality; rather, it’s a mindset that takes effort to maintain when the going gets rough. It must be learned, practiced and mastered just like any other skill. But once you master whys to promote it, you will be changed for the better.

Here are seven effective ways to actively promote your own self-confidence.

1. - Self-confidence is a state of mind that is achieved through intentional action. Allotting time to nurture your mind, body and spirit (preferably one hour a day) can be done in a variety of ways. I prefer to read, exercise and meditate in the morning. If you’re not taking time for yourself, then you’re allowing someone or something to shape your view of the world.

2. - Positive energy leads to positive outcomes, so set your mind to the can-do side of any situation, avoiding the negative self-talk that can make you feel less confident. Find humor in difficult situations. You’ll feel better and the people with whom you work will enjoy your company.

3. - Keep a gratitude journal to remind yourself of the high points of your day and your accomplishments. You will develop more peace and confidence when you are in a grateful state of mind. You can also look back to your accomplishments when you’re not feeling so confident in your current abilities.

4. - It boils down to this: Negative thoughts and insecurities pop up like pimples. And, like pimples, picking at them—even if you mean to discredit and burst that negative bubble—ultimately makes it worse. So, mindfulness practice teaches you to treat thoughts as tools. Use and strengthen the ones you need; discard the ones you don’t.

5. - Many professionals will at some point experience a psychological phenomenon known as imposter syndrome, complete with feelings of inadequacy and a fear that everything accomplished to date has been through sheer luck. To overcome this, learn to internalize accomplishments and stop comparing yourself to others. You are unique and what you accomplish is worthy of being acknowledged.

6. - Your single biggest investment should be in yourself! Putting yourself into courses, other learning situations and/or professional relationships that force you to grow ensures that you’re always expanding, which in turn generates confidence and humility. From therapeutic programs to leadership programs to physical programs, committing to this kind of regular growth and showing up and being fully present are the keys to maintaining confidence.

7. -self-confidence not what you do which means completely outside of any of your success in business. Find ways to get connected with yourself and grow outside of your vocation. Perhaps volunteer, do pro-bono work, meditate, work out, read, spend more time with friends and family. Whatever it takes for you to see your value regardless of how well you’re doing professionally.
